The Depths of My Obsessions Part Deux - Review

So yeah…I gave in to the Dukkha and bought the cute little Rovyvon A5x with the Cree LED and white/red side lights.

I love it.

Yes the battery life isn’t fantastic, but honestly it’s pretty damn good for being the size and weight of a stack of like 3 blueberries.

The brightness is plenty for just about anything you want to do in a reasonable world. I mean I would attach this to my handlebars and use it as a bike light…albeit not for very long, but if I forgot my regular bike light this would work just fine. When I say work well though, I mean as a light to be seen, not necessarily a light to see the whole world in the dark.

Here are a series of pics that show the size and the various sidelight features. Also this one has the GITD or glow in the dark feature. There’s a couple of pics showing just how fast that feature “charges” after just 30 seconds of playing with the light.

This is for size. This is also with the side LED on it’s lower of two settings. Also there is the snap on clip too.

And here is the same pic with the LED facing upwards. This allows you to see the button that turns it on as well.

The GITD feature after just maybe 20 seconds of the side LED on low…wow.

Red LED on the side. Given that the body is translucent, either color side LED makes this tiny little light a pretty good lantern.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid 2 with 3 blueberries lighting it up in 5F weather….for a while!

Here is the higher of two settings for the side LED in white. Not sure my pics do the difference justice but they’re both VERY bright.

The GITD feature after just a couple of minutes of using the side LED’s. Crazy.

A dark room (to test out the front LED of the light)

“Turbo” mode. You press and hold the button and it provides full power. Also, 80’s music starts playing and you feel a little like Van Halen.

The “low” setting

“medium” setting

“high” setting…this will make you enjoy food and music much more.

So I thought I was just buying a toy and something that I would have to look to find uses. In reality it has actually been extremely useful. Sure my cell has a flashlight on it, but it’s big and clunky and takes a second to get to the menu to turn it on. This is instant, can clip on to things, or like a lantern it lights up everything.

For example I was helping my girlfriend with her studio for audio recording and after hooking up all this new equipment she was having issues. Since it is dark in her studio it helped to have a lantern type or normal light to shine on the connectors, knobs etc. to see what the settings were or not hook things up so the pins would break.

It disappears in your pocket. Since I already carry a knife that clips on to my pocket I got one of these Nit Ize micro loks https://www.niteize.com/product/S-Biner-MicroLock.asp and that is what is in the pictures of the laptop with my key fob and the rovyvon light. This works really well because they sit in parallel and don’t get lost or stuck or separated in my pocket. I can still use the light when I need it though. If it’s a problem I can still separate it quickly too.

I actually bought it on Amazon. In hindsight I should have bought the A8x, because for that one Amazon gives you the option of getting the Nichia LED which I hear is better. The reason for this is that on Rovyvon, the A5x light is ~$36 plus shipping, which bumps it up to A8x money on Amazon, but with Amazon prime there’s no shipping cost so…might as well upgrade!

Do NOT go in here! Although I dare you. See if you can’t leave without going and researching and buying something!!
